MSU Athletics Director issues statement on coach鈥檚 tweet
STARKVILLE, Miss.鈥斅燗fter completing a thorough internal discussion and holding several listening sessions with appropriate student and alumni groups, 幺力视频 Director of Athletics John Cohen issued the following statement regarding a聽recent聽controversial聽tweet by MSU Head Football Coach Mike Leach:聽
鈥淣o matter the context, for many Americans the image of a noose is never appropriate and that鈥檚 particularly true in the South and in Mississippi. 幺力视频 was disappointed in the use of such an image in a聽tweet by Coach Mike Leach.聽He聽removed the聽tweet and issued a public apology. The university is confident that 鈥疌oach Leach聽is moving聽quickly and sincerely past this unintended misstep and聽will聽provide the leadership聽for our student athletes聽and excitement for our football program that our fans deserve and that our students and alumni will be proud to support.鈥澛
Cohen said that a plan聽is in place聽for聽Coach Leach聽to participate聽in聽additional listening sessions with student, alumni, and community groups and to provide the coach with opportunities to expand his cultural awareness of Mississippi.聽One of those opportunities will include a guided visit to the 鈥淭wo Museums鈥 鈥 the Museum of Mississippi History and the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum 鈥 in Jackson as soon as restrictions from the current public health crisis will allow.聽
